So, it’s finally happened. To keep my 2007 Ford Escape running, I need to put $3500 into it. At just under 100,000 miles, it’s probably worth about $600.
Do I do it?

It's about more than money, as I was reminded very recently. Almost any new car will have far more safety features, and be more crashworthy than a 2007 model. But going strictly by cost, I pretty much agree with Bream.
My wife has driven Volvos ever since Peugeot left the U.S. market. After a friend of ours driving a Volvo survived being hit by a semi at highway speeds on I81 I became a believer. Her car was accordioned, most of the right side was torn off, but she survived. My last two cars have been Volvos.

Couple of my friends have that same year and model of Escape. They've gotten 200,000 miles out of them.
$3500 may buy you another 100k+ which is way cheaper than a new or used car.
I always hold my cars to near death and once they are paid for I just keep making the same payments to my bank account.
Last truck I bought new in 2004 and it was paid off in 2008. Made payments to myself from 2008-2018. Made buying the new truck in 2018 much easier.
It may or may not. That’s the risk.
As long as you don't have any major engine or transmission problems it might be worth taking the risk.

Got it. It 's basically a transfer case for AWD vehicles. Yeah, that might get pricey.
