Coming Into The Country

Definitely worth the read, especially the eponymous last section.

Just not a fan of McPhee, though. He's an exceptional writer, but too wordy for my taste.

I have an entire bookshelf dedicated to just McPhee. Love his writing and many of his essays are just the right length for my taste -- but yeah, some of his longer pieces do tend to get a bit wordy.

I read Coming Into The Country at an exploration bush camp in Alaska. None of the locals had any complaints about it. Looking For A Ship was cool, and presaged some of the later piracy stuff. It certainly cured any yen for a life in the merchant marine. But Rising From The Plains is my favorite. A real pioneer story.
