    Yes, Aligator mississipenis. This one was about 8 foot. Big belly.

    True WW II story.

    My father took Ranger training somewhere in the deep South. One exercise was to climb a tower and then slide down a rope, landing in a lake. A harmless old half-blind and mostly toothless alligator lived in that lake. On the morning of that exercise mess hall scraps were dumped near the landing point, drawing the alligator. It knew that these funny things splashing into its food would soon go away, but it scared the living bejesus out of the trainees. The NCO instructors had a good time watching the panic develop as the trainees approached the drop zone.
