on the music industry from an unlikely source. We all love great music so it's hard to read that it's much like a hot dog factory.

This is why so many musicians today are going to self production and internet sales. The trouble is on the distributions side when you are being bombarded by the likes of Justin Bieber by the "industry".
New recording musicians have to build a large enough following by playing live small venues and self promote their CD's and hope word of mouth spurs their fan base growth.
The age of the big time star for most musicians is over because of corrosive and unfair contracts as the article points out.
Smart musicians who understand that contracts that "advance" money you'll never be able to pay back, as Courtney explains is truly "sharecropping" and that while you'll likely never be a million record sales artist by going the self production route, at least you own the rights to your music and can make a decent living with hard work and smart promotional efforts.
I know a few very talented songwriters and musicians who are going this route and are making a decent living.

The music industry is the pit of hell and has been so forever...and it won't get any better as long as someone can get rich off somebodies talent. Using lying suits....and they always will be.
I find the assault on free thought disturbing,
I find the willingness to give it up frightening.
