Inspired by George K.... what weight fly rod?

Hypothetical situation... say you were trying to catch a large, toothy, aquatic reptile. One that would take a surface fly resembling a large rat, say in the 3-6 lb. range (for the actual rat, not the fly.) I figure you'd want a spun deer hair fly both for flotation and for light weight so you can cast an actual fly and not a balsa or foam lure....

What weight fly rod would be most appropriate?

    If it’s a Sage XP, a 4 weight should work.

    Even a Sage XP 2wt if it's not too windy.

    At the shop Richie and I worked we took one of those Joan Wulff practice rods, the kind you use to cast yarn, put a micro reel with 5wt line on it. That would do the trick.
