Two and a half hours for a 28 pound fish is a very long time unless you are doing a Lee Wulff type stunt (20 pounder on a #20 fly). The largest salmon I have caught was 22 lbs., on Norway's Laerdal's river and it took about ten minutes to land after multiple runs and jumps.

(True confession - it was caught on a Devon minnow lure, not a fly. The largest fly-caught salmon I have landed was 15 pounds, and that also took about ten minutes.)
