In search of Steelhead

A friend and I ventured north in search of steelhead this past weekend. Unfortunately it wasn't to be. I think we were a couple of days early for the run and ended up only catching a few suckers that were in spawning.

At the end of the day we went to check out the mouth of the river at Lake Superior. Talked to few fisherman that claimed to have caught 2 throwing hardware but otherwise it had been slow for them as well.

Sunday hit a different river in the U.P. and their was a Hendrickson hatch but no risers for some reason. Spring fishing has been off to a slow start in these parts this year. Fish per mile ratio took a big hit this past weekend. 8-)

    Beautiful river, Joe. Are there any resident trout in there when for when you aren't targeting Steelhead? About how far do you live from L. Superior?
    And perhaps most importantly, have you registered for the 4th of July Ice Fishing Tournament? ;)

    There is a small resident population of brook trout. At minimum I live 2-1/2 hours from Lake Superior. This particular spot was a ~4 hour drive. I broke it up by driving to my friends cabin 2 hours north of my place on friday night and then we left Saturday morning from his cabin and drove another 2 hours to the river.

    Nice beach. Where are the cabanas and palm trees?

    At least it's sand. The Lake Erie streams I fish end at stony beaches.

    The timing of everything is off. Did you know that last week there still was some snow on Rib Mountain?

    Oh yeah. That's usually there until at least early to mid June most years. Might be late June this year.

    you wisconsinites need to get your collective **** together before August -- driving out to Madison (or perhaps taking AMTRAK -- we haven't decided yet) to visit my son in his new home, new job, and wish our daughter in law well as she begins law school at UW-Madison.

    if I see snow in August, I think I may just give up on WI. ;-)

    I'm thinking about it this weekend. It's a ~4 hour drive one way from my house though.

    This particular stream has a spring run of steelhead so depending on run-off, rain and stream temps it's a timing thing. I'm not sure if I was too late or too early. It was my first time there so I don't know intricacies of this stream. It was on my bucket list, so I have that going for me.
