Gym memberships.

WTH is the big deal with ripping people off? I've been in my current contract for 2 + years (it was only a 1 year contract). I was told after a year I could drop it anytime. Turns out I have to give 30 days notice which allows them to charge me another month. Owner tells me it's in the contract. But didn't the contract only cover one year? After that period is up I can't see how they can hold me responsible for anything once I cancel??

So I'm moving to a gym closer to home.
Me: I need to see the contract before I sign.
Them: We don't have a paper copy. They pretend to jump through hoops so I can read an online copy on one doc.
I agree to these terms.
They proceed with the sign up but then ask me to electronically sign four docs that I can't see. Are you F ing kidding me?? Oh they'll mail you a copy and you can sign up online and view everything, and if you don't agree you have 72 hours to cancel. Like a dummy I sign because I really like the gym. This was yesterday. Today the system won't let me log in and I haven't received the contract via email. Called them in the morning and they said they would send it. Still no contract. I'm going to cancel it today after work.

Why can't people just offer an honest deal for an honest price and let the business speak for itself? They have an awesome facility and I'd likely remain a member for a very long time. I've shopped around some but it seems all the gyms are doing the same ****.

Well, I'm not a pro but most of what I use the gym for is free weights. Took a fall on some ice last winter and hurt my lower back pretty bad. I've had to lay off dead lifts and squats since then. Tried a few times since and it didn't go well. After several trips to the chiropractor I'm finally feeling pain free. I'll start back really light in the next few months. The last thing I want to do is re-injure my back working out...

They finally got me a copy via email. Looks like the agreement we made verbally. Guess I'll stay. I'm pretty excited as this place blows the older gym away equipment wise and is 1/3 the price.

Wonder if they act like that everywhere? Local gym owner here is kind of putz also.

When I joined he stated he wanted an $89 enrollment fee then a 2 year contract was $74/month for family. I asked what is the enrollment fee for? He responded that it's for putting my name in the computer, setting up ACH and a issuing me a memership card. I then said..."so about 10-15 minutes of work for $89? You have to be kiddng me?" I then asked him to waive the enrollment fee and he told me no. So then I responded and said "so your not willing to waive the enrollment fee for the ~$800/year you're going to make from me from the monthly membership fee?" He responded and said "nope" so I said c-ya and walked out.

A week later he calls me and said he would waive the enrollment fee if I joined for 2 years.

    Funny how that works.

The bad thing is, he is the only game in town...only 3 miles from my house. Next closest is 30 miles away, so he knows he has you by the balls.

Gyms are a scam. It's a feature, not a bug.

Squatting tomorrow. Power to the people!

(Sarcasm Alert!) Here in socialistic Colorado, besides the free pot, the county (Jefferson County, named after the socialist president) has built several excellent fitness centers with several dozen exercise and weight machines, as well as a pool and spa. One is located only 10 blocks from my abode. I get a free membership with my health plan, also socialistic (medicare advantage). I feel guilty for having such an inefficient government entity in my area, as opposed to such an obviously superior private system like yours.

No, but I use the elliptical exercise machine, which requires some pushing outward. Why they call it elliptical I don't know, because it certainly isn't shaped like an ellipse. There are mirrors all around the walls, so I can check out all the babes running on the treadmills both front and back. Sometimes I catch them watching me watching them.
