You funny. The justice department deemed them legal not the NRA.

“The NRA believes that devices designed to allow semi-automatic rifles to function like fully-automatic rifles should be subject to additional regulations,” read a statement issued by the powerful organization Thursday.

    Why not just ban them?

Bu, the point of my original post was that the NRA has been so adamant about ANY gun laws, and now they are showing some softness (reason?). Does this show some change in policy? we will see.

I'm betting that will be the end result. Again is this bad?
You do realize you can do the exact same thing with a shoe string and your belt loop.

Like I said you can do the same thing with a string and belt loop. All it does is get the barrel hot and waste ammo. When someone improved on the shoe string method with these bump fire stocks I was really surprised the ATF said they were OK. I just couldn't see the NRA putting up support for these stocks.

The ATF doesn't write the laws. It had to assess whether the bump stops were legal under existing law. Also they took into account that the manufacturer claimed they designed for people with upper limb disabilities. That description sounds stupid considering it would be awkward to use one without two arms and hands that are at least mostly functional.
