Hah, she should attend some Christian churches that are constantly harping about donations, and even threatening attendees with spiritual consequences. It can get ridiculous (yeah, I've attended a few).
My parents kvetched about the fees any time we went to synagogue. It certainly left me with a negative impression.
Rationally, the set fees and stable income for the synagogue make more sense. That's Jews for you.
Fees are higher in Hades, I guess.

But then you get the donation drives for the temple and on High Holidays get hit up for the Fund.

We (Primitive Baptists) don't believe in tithing. Of course, we contribute to the pastor and building as we feel the need to do so, but the pastor isn't a paid occupation.

I went to a different church twice just to try it out. Both times the sermons were guilt trips about not tithing enough and once, the pastor even got on to the congregation about not inviting him and his wife over for dinner. I didn't go back.

Steven, I wasn't informed about the costs of converting. Creekguy said he had a mohel that would perform the rite for $10, so I was thinking I could get in on the cheap.

Every once in awhile, we all wish G-d chose somebody else.

Maybe the thing for you is Cantor School. You sing, right? http://huc.edu/academics/become-cantor

On edit: maybe the Lodge could crowdsource your tuition.

Are Jew Points redeemable for cash or in-kind rabbinical services?

Ah no. But $100 to the Rabbi Fund would be appreciated.
